Year Ender 2024: A period of political turmoil and controversies across the globe

PTC News Desk: 2024 has been a year of controversies and scandals across the globe. From Donald Trump's assassination to South Korea President's impeachment, these incidents sent shockwaves through the country. As the year comes to an end, here's a look back at some of the most distressing incidents that made headlines. 


South Korea President Impeachment

South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 3 declared martial law citing anti-state forces and North Korean threats. However the decree was short lived as parliamentarians overruled president's order. After surviving initial impeachment attempt, he was later impeached on December 14.

Donald Trump's Assassination Attempt

US President-elect Donald Trump had a close shave while he was addressing a rally before presidential elections and a bullet pearced his right ear. Another incident targeting Donald Trump took place which was foiled by police later. 

Donald Trump returns as US President

Four years after a failed re-election bid, Donad Trump had made a spectacular comeback to White House defeating Kamala Harris. Trump became first president in the history of United States to serve a non-consecutive two year term.

Vinesh Phogat's Disqualification from Olympics

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was an inch close to achieve her gold medal when her dreams crashing down after she was disqualified from Olympics citing non-compliance of weight with designated parameters. Phogat's disqualification sparked a controversy sending shockwaves throughout India.

France Mass Rape Trial

A mass rape trial in France, involving 72-year-old Gisele Pelicot, sent shockwaves across the world. Pelicot was drugged and raped by her former husband, Dominique Pelicot, and dozens of men from 2011 to 2020. A panel of judges on December 19 found Dominique guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in jail. The court also convicted all other 50 defendants - aged 27 to 74 - in the French mass rape trial, with no acquittals.

Fall of Asad's government

The rule of Al Assad came to an end when its government was overthrown in December. The rebels of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham stormed Damascus under the leadership of Abu Mohammad al Jawlini, forcing the incumbent president to flee to Moscow.

Sheikh Hasina's Ouster

Sheikh Hasina in 2024 won elections and became Prime Minister for fifth time. Soon the elections were marred by sporadic violence leading to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. The opposition parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, boycotted the polls holding the government responsible for stifling the voices of dissent and creating an uneven field.
