'Become part of US': US president-elect Donald Trump jests Canada on US tariffs
PTC News Desk: In a witty remark, US President-elect Donald Trump has asked Canada to become part of US if they cannot handle aggressive US tariffs. The remarks came as both the leaders held a dinner meet at the Republican leader's golf estate last week.
The Trump-Trudeau meeting held as Canadian Prime Minister made an unannounced trip to the US after Trump said that he would impose aggressive tariffs on Canadian products as soon as he will assume charge. The Republican leader threatened to impose 25% tariffs in the light of Canada's failure to apprehend illegal immigrants entering US.
Reportedly during the dinner, Trudeau told Trump that the new tariffs would kill Canada's economy to which Trump quiped Trudeau and said maybe Canada should become the 51st state of the USA. However he was quick to rescind and asserted that Prime Minister title is better suited to Trudeau rather than governor. Several issues were discussed during the dinner meeting at Mar-a-Lago.
A weak economy, rising prices and a housing crisis have queered the pitch for Trudeau ahead of crucial elections next year.
One of Trump's aides then suggested that Canada would be a very liberal state. To this, Trump said that Canada could possibly become two states -- a conservative and a liberal one -- drawing more laughter.
