US murder: 29-year-old Jasvir Kaur, who was killed in New Jersey, was shot seven times in the face by the accused, according to the latest updates.

Notably, a Punjabi teenager identified as Gaurav Singh Gill opened fire on Jasvir Kaur and her cousin Gagandeep at Cartaret in New Jersey, United States last week. While Jasvir was killed in the attack, Gagandeep is said to be critically injured.

Gaurav Gill had recently arrived in the United States and was living in Kent, Washington.

The shooting occurred outside a residential building in Carteret, New Jersey on Wednesday morning, and police apprehended the attacker hours later, according to CBS News.

The accused, Gaurav Gill, and the woman he injured, Gagandeep Kaur, knew each other and had attended an IELTS coaching centre in Nakodar, Punjab.

Jasvir Kaur was from Gorsian, a village near Nurmahal in Punjab. She worked at Amazon's facility in Carteret, New Jersey. Her husband, a car driver, was out of town at the time of the incident.

Jasvir moved to the United States about five years ago, while Gagandeep arrived on a study visa recently.

"Our daughter took her in and supported her in every way. Jasvir was asleep when the incident happened. Gagandeep got into an argument with the accused outside the house and called Jasvir for help. When Jasvir intervened, the accused fired seven shots at her face, killing her," Jasvir's father, Kewal Singh stated.

Kewal Singh stated that both her daughter and son-in-law were very supportive of Gagandeep.

Gagandeep and Gaurav Gill arrived in the United States just recently and at the same time. Her mother stated that she is not familiar with Gaurav and is unaware of any disputes between them.

Gill is charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, one count of fourth-degree possession of a high-capacity magazine, and one count of first-degree attempted murder.

Gill appeared before a judge in Middlesex County Court on Thursday for his brief first court appearance. The hearing was held at the Middlesex County Jail and presided over by Judge Gary Price.
