Tahawwur Rana extradited to India: Pakistan disowns 26/11 accused amid fears of explosive revelations

PTC Web Desk: In a dramatic turn following the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks accused Tahawwur Rana from the United States to India, Pakistan has swiftly distanced itself from the terror suspect, claiming he is no longer a Pakistani citizen.

In an official statement, the Pakistan Foreign Office said, “Tahawwur Rana has not renewed his Pakistani documents in the last two decades. His Canadian nationality is very clear.” The move is being seen as a damage-control tactic by Islamabad amid concerns over what Rana might disclose during the upcoming trial in India.

Sources in Indian intelligence suggest that Pakistan’s denial stems from Rana’s alleged links with the Pakistan Army and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He is believed to be a trusted insider with long-standing ties to Pakistan’s military establishment.

India has consistently maintained that the 2008 Mumbai attacks were orchestrated with active support from Pakistan-based terror groups and state elements.

Rana, 64, a Pakistan-born Canadian, is a close aide of David Coleman Headley, also known as Daood Gilani, a key conspirator in the 26/11 attacks. Headley, a US national, is serving a 35-year sentence in an American prison after turning approver in the case.

After his extradition plea was rejected by the US Supreme Court, Rana was flown to New Delhi. His trial is expected to reignite focus on Pakistan’s role in harbouring and supporting global terrorism.
