Singapore recalls Everest Fish Curry Masala over unsafe levels of ethylene oxide

PTC Web Desk: Singapore has announced a recall of Everest Fish Curry Masala, a popular spice blend imported from India, due to elevated levels of ethylene oxide, a pesticide deemed unsafe for human consumption. The move follows a notification from the Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong, which highlighted the presence of ethylene oxide in the spice blend at levels exceeding permissible limits.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) confirmed the recall in a statement, indicating that the Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong had raised concerns about the product. In response, the SFA has directed the importer, Sp Muthiah & Sons Pte. Ltd., to undertake a full recall of the affected products.

Ethylene oxide is often used as a pesticide to fumigate agricultural produce and control microbial contamination. However, its use in food products is strictly prohibited due to potential health risks. Although Singaporean regulations allow ethylene oxide for sterilising spices, the presence of elevated levels in Everest Fish Curry Masala presents a risk to consumers.

The SFA advised anyone who may have consumed the affected product and has concerns about their health to seek medical attention. Additionally, consumers are encouraged to contact their point of purchase with any inquiries.

Despite the recall and the statement from the SFA, Everest has yet to release an official response. Everest Fish Curry Masala is a well-known spice blend often used in Indian cuisine to enhance flavour, and the recall may impact consumers who regularly use this product in their cooking.

This development highlights the importance of strict regulation and monitoring of food products, particularly when it comes to substances like ethylene oxide. The health and safety of consumers must always be a top priority, and authorities must continue to work diligently to ensure that food products meet safety standards.
