Russia-US relations all-time low: Russia warns citizens against travel to US, Canada amid escalating tensions
PTC Web Desk: Russia has cautioned its citizens against travelling to the United States and its allied nations in Europe, citing worsening relations and potential risks to their safety. The warning comes amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which has further strained Moscow's ties with Washington, bringing them to their lowest point since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued the advisory during a news briefing on Wednesday. She described the current state of US-Russia relations as being “on the verge of rupture.”
"Trips to the United States of America, whether for private purposes or official necessity, are fraught with serious risks," Zakharova stated. She further warned against travelling to Canada and most European Union countries, describing them as “allied satellite states” of the US.
“We urge you to refrain from trips to the United States and its allied countries, including Canada and, with limited exceptions, European Union nations, especially during the holiday season,” Zakharova added.
Similarly, the United States has issued travel warnings for its citizens in Russia, citing risks of harassment or detention by Russian security forces.
Rising tensions escalate warnings
The diplomatic rift follows significant US military support for Ukraine, which has included $62 billion in aid since the war began in February 2022. The US recently authorised Ukraine to use long-range missiles capable of striking deep into Russian territory, a move that Moscow claims has lowered the nuclear threshold and further destabilized the region.
Additionally, the US extended a $20 billion loan to Ukraine, with President Joe Biden stating that the repayment would come from interest earned on immobilized Russian sovereign assets. “These loans will help Ukraine defend and rebuild its nation. Tyrants will be held accountable for the damage they cause,” Biden remarked.
While the White House insists its actions are in defense of global democratic interests, Russia accuses the US of using Ukraine as a tool to weaken and ultimately destroy Moscow.
