PTC News Desk: Central Unified School District has named its new school Jaswant Singh Khalra Elementary School in Fresno, California. The board president stated that this is the first public school in North America to be named after someone of Sikh descent.

The board decided that the school at Shields and Brawley will be named Jaswant Singh Khalra Elementary School. Six board members voted in favor of the name, while one member abstained.

Jaswant Singh Khalra was a human rights activist who uncovered thousands of disappearances, illegal killings, and cremations carried out by police in India. He was later killed by the police. Board members described him as an icon for the Punjabi community in the Central Valley, noting that Khalra’s daughter attended Fresno State and that his family resides in the area. Back in 2017, Victoria Park was also renamed Jaswant Singh Khalra Park.
