PTC Exclusive: Lord Indarjit Singh to represent Sikh community on King Charles coronation; know his role

Lord Indarjit Singh of Wimbledon is scheduled to represent the Sikh community during the coronation of King Charles III which is to be held in the Westminister Abbey near the House of Commons in London on May 6.

Also called the House of Peers, the House of Lords is the upper house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.


Lord Indarjit Singh also represented the Sikh community at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, according to former Member of Parliament Tarlochan Singh.

Speaking exclusively to PTC News, Lord Indarjit Singh said that he's honoured to receive the special invitation for King Charles's coronation, adding that "this is an honour for the entire Sikh community."

Lord Indarjit Singh, talking about King Charles III, said that he (King Charles) has great respect for the Sikh Community."

"He likes the Sikh community so much that he attends many functions. He also has a good understanding of Sikhism. King Charles delivered an excellent address on Sikhism at the Royal Albert Hall," he said.

"King Charles III, like Sikhs, believes that there is good in all religions and that no religion is superior to another." He wishes to break down religious barriers and demonstrate religious commonality. He believes that there is one divine light in all human beings," Indarjit Singh added.

He further said that "nowadays religion is a major cause of conflict. It should, nevertheless, be a major ingredient for peaceful living and respect."

Lord Indarjit Singh’s role in the ceremony:

He explained that "the royals like everything written down to perfection and thus have long rehearsals."

Indarjit Singh would be presenting a glove to King Charles. The ceremony will remind him that he has authority but he must exercise it gently and that God is the ultimate judge of things.

He would also be part of the procession during the Coronation ceremony of King Charles.

At the end of the coronation, he would give a message of goodwill "We are neighbours in faith, we recognize the importance of public service and wish you well."

Notably, peers from different faiths - Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and Jewish - will be part of the procession during the coronation ceremony for the first time.

The Sikh community lauded King Charles' decision to give equal status to all religions.

Lord Patel will represent the Hindu community, Lord Kamall will represent the Muslim community, and Baronees Merron will represent the Jewish community.
