'Promoted terrorism': UK to ban Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir
UK to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir: The United Kingdom is to ban the Sunni Islamist political organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir as a terror group. On Monday, Britain's interior minister, James Cleverly, said he had begun the process of banning the organisation, claiming it was anti-Semitic and promoted "terrorism".
The group has already been banned in Bangladesh, Egypt, Germany, Pakistan, and several Central Asian and Arab countries.
"Hizb ut-Tahrir is an anti-Semitic organisation that actively promotes and encourages terrorism, including praising and celebrating the appalling 7 October attacks (on Israel)," he stated.
If MPs agree to Cleverly's draft order, the ban will take effect on January 19, making support for the group an offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
It can also result in asset seizures.
