PM Modi leaves for Russia to attend BRICS Summit; here's what to expect

PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Russia on Tuesday for a two-day visit to attend the BRICS Summit in Kazan. During his visit, Modi is likely to hold bilateral talks with counterparts from BRICS countries and other leaders.

“The Summit, themed ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,’ will serve as an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The 16th BRICS Summit will be held in Kazan from October 22 to 24, hosted by Russia.

This is Modi's second visit to Russia in 2024, following his travel to Moscow in July for the 22nd India-Russia annual summit.

“Leaving for Kazan, Russia, to take part in the BRICS Summit. India attaches immense importance to Brics, and I look forward to extensive discussions on a wide range of subjects. I also look forward to meeting various leaders there,” PM Modi posted on X.

BRICS Summit: What to expect?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Kazan summit.

“India values the close cooperation within Brics which has emerged as an important platform for dialogue and discussion on issues concerning the global developmental agenda, reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, building resilient supply chains, promoting cultural and people to people connect, among others,” the PMO said.

China’s foreign ministry stated that President Xi Jinping will attend the summit led by Russia. However, there is no confirmation of a meeting between him and Modi.

According to the MEA, Modi will hold bilateral discussions with counterparts from BRICS member states as well as other leaders invited to the summit.

Two significant activities related to BRICS institutional growth during Russia's chairmanship in 2024 are the integration of invited countries as full members and the continuing development of the partner country model, which includes a list of prospective partner countries.

Vinay Kumar, India's Ambassador to Russia, stated that India is a founding member of BRICS and is dedicated to economic cooperation within the group's framework, which he defined as a "very foundational principle."

The summit is the largest of its kind in Russia since the country deployed soldiers in Ukraine. It comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to demonstrate that Western efforts to isolate Moscow during the two-and-a-half-year offensive have been ineffective.

The United States has dismissed the idea that the BRICS could emerge as a "geopolitical rival," but it has expressed concern about Moscow using its diplomatic influence during the current conflict in Ukraine.

The BRICS currently account for 45% of the world's population and 35% of its economy, as measured by purchasing power parity, with China accounting for more than half of its economic strength.
