PTC News Desk: On Thursday, an explosion followed by a devastating fire occurred at a family dairy farm near Dimmitt, Texas, killing more than 18,000 cows.

According to the Castro County Sheriff's Office, the incident took place at the South Fork Dairy Farm. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but one employee was rescued by local firefighters.

The farm is located in one of the state's largest milk production counties. In response to the incident, the Animal Welfare Institute, one of the oldest US animal protection groups, has called for federal laws and intervention to prevent similar barn fires in the future.

"This would be the most deadly fire involving cattle in the past decade, since we started tracking that in 2013," said Marjorie Fishman, a spokesperson for the organization. Unfortunately, there are currently no federal regulations in place to protect animals from such fires. A few US states have adopted individual protection codes, but Texas is not one of them. Reuters estimates that about 6.5 million farm animals have died in barn fires over the last ten years.
