Nobel Prize in Physics: AI innovators John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton win Nobel Prize for physics
PTC Web Desk: The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton, as announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, on Tuesday. This year's recipients have utilised principles of physics to establish foundational methods that underpin modern machine learning technology, according to the official statement.
John Hopfield is recognised for developing an associative memory model capable of storing and reconstructing images and patterns within data. Geoffrey Hinton, on the other hand, introduced a method that autonomously discovers characteristics in data, enabling the identification of specific elements within images.
Last year, the Physics Nobel was awarded to three scientists—Anne L'Huillier, Pierre Agostini, and Ferenc Krausz—for their breakthrough in capturing the first split-second images of spinning electrons, a discovery with potential applications in electronics and medical diagnostics.
The prestigious Physics Nobel Prize, founded through the legacy of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, carries a financial reward of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately Rs 8.3 crore).
