MDP plans impeachment motion against President Muizzu: Report
PTC News Desk: Maldives' main Opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a majority in the Parliament, is reportedly preparing to file an impeachment motion against President Mohamed Muizzu. According to a Monday afternoon report by Sun.mv, an MDP MP revealed that the party, in collaboration with Democrats, has successfully gathered enough signatures for the impeachment motion, though it is yet to be submitted to the Parliament.
The decision to pursue the impeachment motion comes on the heels of a violent incident that unfolded in the Maldives Parliament the day before. During a special session convened to seek parliamentary approval for the ministers in President Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet, government MPs aligned with the pro-government parties People’s National Congress (PNC) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) disrupted proceedings and confronted the Speakers, leading to a clash within the Parliament.
As the Opposition gears up to submit the impeachment motion, tensions remain high in the Maldivian political landscape, with the MDP looking to challenge the leadership of President Muizzu through parliamentary processes. The move signals a critical juncture in the ongoing political dynamics of the Maldives.
