Maldivian teen dies: President Muizzu allegedly denies approval for Indian plane
PTC News Desk: In a heartbreaking incident, a 14-year-old boy in the Maldives lost his life on Saturday, reportedly due to President Mohammed Muizzu's refusal to grant approval for the use of an Indian-provided Dornier aircraft for his airlift, as per reports from Maldivian media.
The young boy, battling a brain tumor and recovering from a stroke, urgently needed an air ambulance to transport him from his residence in Gaaf Alif Villingili to the capital city, Male, given the critical nature of his condition.
The family claims that the authorities failed to promptly arrange the required medical evacuation. The boy's father expressed frustration, stating, "We called Island Aviation to get him to Male' immediately after the stroke, but they did not answer our calls. They answered the phone at 8:30 am on Thursday. The solution is to have an air ambulance for such cases," as reported by Maldivian media Adhadhu.
The emergency evacuation request was made, but the boy was brought to Male 16 hours later. A statement from the Aasandha Company Limited, which received the evacuation request, mentioned that they initiated the evacuation process immediately but faced a last-minute technical issue with the flight, preventing the planned diversion.
This tragic incident occurs amid a recent strain in diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives, triggered by derogatory comments from Maldivian ministers towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Reflecting on the boy's death, Maldives MP Meekail Naseem commented, "People shouldn't have to pay with their lives to satisfy the President's animosity towards India."
