India-Maldives row: Indian troops in Maldives to be withdrawn? Check key highlights of India, Maldives meeting

India-Maldives row: India and Maldives held the second high-level core group meeting in New Delhi on Friday in the national capital over the presence of Indian military personnel in the island nation. 
The first meeting of the High-Level Core Group between the Maldives and India was held in Male on January 14.

The two nations had discussed finding a "mutually workable solution" to continue the operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medical evacuation services to the people of the Maldives


Key Highlights of India, Maldives meeting

  • India and Maldives agreed on a set of mutually workable solutions to enable the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medvac services to the people of the Maldives.
  • During the meeting, the two nations continued their discussions on wide-ranging issues related to bilateral cooperation towards identifying steps to strengthen the partnership. 
  • India and Maldives also discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation and expediting the implementation of ongoing projects.

  • During the meeting, India and Maldives agreed to withdrawal of Indian troops in Maldives. India will replace its military personnel in one of the three aviation platforms in the Maldives by March 10 and will complete the replacement by May 10.
  • The third meeting of the high-level core group will be held in Male on a mutually agreeable date during the last week of February.
  • Currently, there are around 70 Indian troops, along with Dornier 228 maritime patrol aircraft and two HAL Dhruv helicopters, stationed in the Maldives.
  • India has a deployment of around 80 personnel, including medical staff, to operate three aircraft to patrol the archipelago's vast maritime territory.

India and the Maldives row stirred over derogatory remarks made by Maldivian leaders against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India after Modi posted stunning pictures from his visit to Lakshadweep, showcasing his enjoyment amid the beautiful beaches and scenic locations. Despite the visual appeal of the post, it has stirred controversy abroad.

The row between India and Maldives also impacted the Maldives tourism sector badly.
