US Presidential Election 2024: In a surprise move at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, U.S. Vice President and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris delivered an unexpected speech on the first day, expressing deep gratitude to President Joe Biden for his long-standing service to the nation. The Indian-origin leader praised the 81-year-old President's leadership, stating that the country remains "forever grateful" for his dedication.

"I want to kick us off by celebrating our incredible president, Joe Biden. Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation. We are forever grateful to you," Harris declared to an enthusiastic crowd, breaking with the tradition where presidential nominees typically speak on the final day of the convention.

Harris, who is 59, is anticipated to formally accept her nomination for the upcoming November U.S. elections during the convention. Her early appearance was met with loud cheers, setting a spirited tone for the event.

"People from every corner of our country and every walk of life are here, and this November, we will come together and declare with one voice that we are moving forward. Let us always remember—when we fight, we win," she added, rallying the attendees.

The four-day convention, which will conclude on August 22, is expected to see Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, officially nominated as the Democratic candidates for U.S. President and Vice President.

President Biden is also slated to give a 'swan song' address, where he is expected to endorse Harris as the Democratic nominee against former President Donald Trump. In addition, former U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are scheduled to speak, and the Democrats plan to honor Hillary Clinton, who was the party's official candidate in the 2016 Presidential Election but lost to Trump.
