Israel-Hamas truce deal extended by another day, just minutes before it was set to expire
PTC Web Desk: Just minutes before the end of a temporary truce deal, Israel and Hamas on Thursday agreed to extend the same by another day, as reported by Qatar — the mediator between the two sides.
The extension of the truce between Israel and Hamas came just as it was to expire at 7 am Thursday. As per the Qatari Foreign Ministry, the truce has been extended under the same terms and conditions as earlier. Hamas has released 10 Israeli hostages per day in exchange for the release of 30 Palestinian prisoners.
It is learnt that the development came after a last-minute deadlock. Hamas had been maintaining that "Israel has rejected a proposed list that included seven living captives and the remains of three who the group said were killed in previous Israeli airstrikes". However, Israel later reported that Hamas had submitted an improved list, following which the truce has been extended by another day.
Notably, according to the initial truce agreement, Israel agreed to halt its military operations in Gaza for four days and emphasised that it would release three Palestinian security prisoners for each of the 50 hostages freed from Gaza, The Times of Israel reported.
Notably, Israel President Isaac Herzog is set to attend the COP28 climate conference in Dubai later this week to hold sideline meetings with global leaders, in order to get the remaining hostages released from Gaza, his office said.
"The purpose of these meetings is to reveal to world leaders in a clear and profound manner the atrocities committed by the Hamas terror organization during the horrific massacre on October 7 and to emphasize the essential security threat that led to Israel's forced entry into the war," Herzog's office said.
Furthermore, Herzog will also use the meetings to highlight the steps Israel is taking to mitigate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as it continues its war against Hamas once the truce concludes, The Times of Israel reported.
