Massive explosion rocks Iran's most advanced port, over 400 injured
PTC News Desk: Multiple container explosions triggered a massive blast and fire at a major Iranian port on Saturday, injuring 400 people. Video footage captured thick plumes of smoke rising from the port.
"The explosion occurred in a part of the Shahid Rajaee port dock, and we are extinguishing the fire," an official stated.
Shahid Rajaee Port, Iran’s most advanced container terminal, is situated about 1,000 kilometers south of Tehran, 23 kilometers west of Bandar Abbas — the capital of Hormozgan province — and just north of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for nearly 20% of the world’s oil trade.
Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, head of the province's crisis management authority has confirmed to state tv that the cause of the incident was the explosion of several containers.
"We are currently evacuating and transporting the injured to nearby medical centres," he added.
