Indo-American fired: Workplace discrimination based on language or any other factor is not acceptable and goes against the principles of fair treatment and equal opportunities.

In many countries, including the United States, discrimination in the workplace based on race, ethnicity, language, or national origin is illegal under various anti-discrimination laws, but in the incident from last year an 78-year-old Indo American has been fired from the company for speaking in Hindi in office with his family member who was on death bed.

Recently, Anil Varshney, a Senior Systems Engineer with Huntsville missile defence contractor Parsons Corporation,  filed a federal lawsuit alleging systemic discriminatory actions that left him jobless in October last year for just speaking in Hindi with his family member.

Who is Anil Varshney?

Anil Varshney is an Indian American engineer, who dedicated years of service as a Senior Systems Engineer in Parsons Corporation.

Vashney completed his studies from Banaras, Hindu University before immigrating to the United States in 1968. After that he pursued a Master's degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Oklahoma State University.

Why Anil Varshney fired from the company?

The incident sparked on September 22, 2022 when a co-worker of Varshney heard him speaking Hindi during a two-minute video with his critically ill brother-in-law in India.

This brief exchange led to Varshney’s alleged wrongful termination. Varshney’s co worker said that he violated the rules and regulations of the company and should be fired from the company.

Moreover, due to his links with the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) through Parsons Corporation, a longstanding contractor for MDA, Varshney also received several derogatory comments from conversations by younger white colleagues.

In the recent update, the engineer took legal action against his former employer and Parsons Corporation and stated that the lawsuit is putting wrong allegations on him.

Telling about the company, Anil said that the Company is involved in discriminatory practices. The lawsuit is aiming for his reinstatement to a position comparable to his former one. He is also seeking the restoration of his privileges and the removal of any disciplinary records associated with his case.
