PTC News Desk: The Indian embassy in New York confirmed today the tragic demise of Mohammed Abdul Arfath, a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, who had ventured to the United States in 2023 to pursue a Master's degree at Cleveland State University. Arfath, who had been reported missing for nearly three weeks, was discovered deceased.

The embassy had been in constant communication with Arfath's family and had been collaborating with local law enforcement agencies in the search efforts prior to this somber revelation.


Expressing profound sorrow, the embassy conveyed its heartfelt condolences to Mohammed Abdul Arfath's grieving family. They shared the distressing news through a post on social media platform X. Additionally, the embassy assured that it remains engaged with local authorities to facilitate a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Arfath's untimely passing.

Furthermore, the embassy pledged its unwavering support to the bereaved family in repatriating Arfath's mortal remains back to India. This unfortunate incident marks the eleventh instance of an Indian national's demise in the United States this year, with a significant number of them being students. The successive tragedies have sent shockwaves through the Indian student community in the US and their families back home in India.

According to statistics provided by US authorities, the influx of Indian students to the country witnessed a notable increase in the 2022-2023 academic session, with over 2.6 lakh students migrating—a significant surge of 35 per cent from the preceding session.
