Indian-origin nurse stabbed at UK hospital; suspect charged with attempted murder
PTC Web Desk: Achamma Cherian, a 57-year-old Indian-origin nurse, sustained critical injuries after being stabbed in the neck with scissors while on duty at Oldham Royal Hospital’s acute medical unit in Greater Manchester, UK.
The incident was reported on Saturday around 11.30 pm. Roman Haque, 37, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article in connection with the incident. Haque appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, identifying himself as "Mohammed Roman Haque." The case has been referred to the Crown Court, as confirmed by District Judge Jane Hamilton.
Cherian, a mother of two and a nurse with over a decade of experience at the hospital, is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries. Her colleagues described her as a “kind-hearted and popular member” of the Indian Association Oldham (IAO). The British Indian Nurses Association (BINA) condemned the attack, stating on X: "We are deeply shocked and saddened by this brutal incident. Our thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones."
Cherian resides close to the hospital with her husband, Alexander Chandy, and has been a familiar face in the community since 2007. Neighbours said she often worked night shifts and was well-regarded locally.t
