Incredibly rare! 3,000-year-old ancient sword unearthed in Germany

Discovery of 3000-year-old sword: An incredibly rare, gleaming, well reserved and an ancient sword has been unearthed by archaeologists in Germany.

The 3000-years-old ancient full-hilt sword with an octagonal hilt made entirely of bronze has been recovered from the southern town of Nördlingen, Germany.

An exceptional sword is believed to date back to the late 14th Century BC i.e. the Middle Bronze Age but the condition of the bronze is so extraordinarily good that "it almost still shines.

According to a statement issued on June 14 by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection, the ancient sword has been discovered with the grave containing bones of man, woman and a teenager with other bronze goods.

Though it is not yet clear that what was the clear connection between the bronze items and buried bodies but the archeologists are in an ongoing study to find the same.

Head of BLfD, Prof Mathias Pfeil said that,“The sword and the burial still need to be examined so that our archeologists can categorise this find more precisely. But we can already say that the state of preservation is extraordinary. A find like this is very rare.”

The structure of the sword is very complex as the handle of the sword is cast over the blade(so-called overlay casting). The decoration is via an inlay and by means of hallmarks. However, the blade doesn't have any visible cut marks or signs of wear, suggesting that it had a ceremonial or symbolic purpose.

As per the statement by BLfD, the further examination in underway and the team of archaeologists  to soon find out some  of the mysteries surrounding this strange, shiny sword.
