More than 90 killed after earthquake of 7.1 magnitude jolted Tibet, toll likely to rise
PTC News Desk: More than 90 people were killed after an earthquake of 7.1 magnitude jolted Tibet near Nepal border and tremors were felt in several parts of India. The death toll is likely to rise.
Several officials along with rescue teams have reached the spot and rescue operation is underway.
Nepal is nestled in a geologically active region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, forming the Himalayas and making earthquakes a frequent occurrence. In 2015, nearly 9,000 people died and more than 22,000 were injured when a 7.8-magnitude quake struck Nepal, destroying more than half a million homes.
According to the USGS Earthquakes, the earthquake struck 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, Nepal, around 6:35 AM.
Tremors were felt in several parts of India. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 93 kilometers, northeast of Lobuche, Nepal. The tremors were particularly felt in Bihar where people were seen outside their houses and apartments.
