Canadian MP Chandra Arya barred from running polls under Trudeau's liberal party over India ties
PTC News Desk: Canada's liberal party has revoked Indian origin MP Chandra Arya's bid to run for the party leadership and his nomination in his own Ottawa Nepean constituency over his ties with the Indian government, Canadian media reported.
According to the reports, Arya did not inform the Canadian government about his visit to India and meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year despite the tensed diplomatic relations between both the countries.
Reportedly, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) had informed the government about Arya’s alleged close ties to the Indian government, including its High Commission in Ottawa.
Meanwhile Chandra Arya has explicitly denied the allegations of influence from India and asserted that owing to his position as parliamentarian, he regularly engaged with other diplomats and heads of the governments.
“Not once have I sought – nor been required to seek – permission from the government to do so," Arya said.
Arya, who is of the Hindu faith, also believes that his removal from the Liberal Party’s leadership race and Nepean nomination is due to his outspoken stand against Khalistan movement in Canada.
