Canada to make arrests in Hardeep Nijjar killing case soon: Report

PTC Web Desk: In the ongoing India-Canada diplomatic discord concerning the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar earlier this year, two suspects linked to his fatal shooting in British Columbia are reportedly under police surveillance in Canada. The authorities expect their arrest in the following weeks, as per The Globe and Mail's sources.

The Canadian media outlet revealed that the suspected assailants remained within Canada after Hardeep Singh Nijjar's killing in Surrey. Law enforcement has been monitoring them for several months. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) aims to make arrests and file charges soon, as noted by two sources cited in The Globe and Mail's report.

The strained relations between India and Canada stemmed from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations regarding Indian involvement in Nijjar's killing on Canadian soil. Nijjar was fatally shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey on June 18.

Upon the imminent charges against the duo, law enforcement intends to disclose their roles and any potential links to the Indian government, according to the sources. The identities of the sources remain undisclosed due to confidentiality concerns.

The RCMP has not provided comments or responded to queries concerning the ongoing investigation or the likelihood of imminent charges.

Earlier, Canadian PM Trudeau accused "agents of the Indian government" in Nijjar's killing, leading to diplomatic actions between the two nations. Despite Canada's claims, India has refuted the allegations, stating a lack of evidence supporting the accusations. The discord has resulted in diplomatic expulsions and visa service halts, further straining relations between the countries.

Trudeau reiterated the allegations of Indian involvement in Nijjar's murder, critiquing India's handling of Canadian diplomats. He highlighted the violation of the Vienna Convention and stressed Canada's commitment to upholding the rule of law in diplomatic engagements.
