Canada: Indian couple, 3-month-old killed in multi-vehicle collision during police chase
PTC News Desk: A multiple-vehicle collision near Toronto, Canada, killed four people, including an Indian couple and their three-month-old grandchild.
The accident occurred on Highway 401 in Whitby, about 50 kilometres east of Toronto, when Ontario police pursued a liquor store robbery suspect driving in the wrong direction. All four people were pronounced dead on the scene.
According to Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), two of the victims, a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, were visitors from India. However, the SIU did not reveal the victims' names.
The couple's three-month-old grandson was also killed in the multi-vehicle crash. Highway 401 was closed for several hours following Monday's incident, according to reports.
According to the agency, the infant's parents, a 33-year-old father and a 27-year-old mother, were in the same vehicle and were rushed to the hospital.
The mother suffered serious injuries, according to the SIU.
According to CBC News, the 21-year-old robbery suspect died in the collision, which involved at least six vehicles.
According to officials, the deadly car chase began with a liquor store robbery in Bowmanville and ended about 20 minutes later when the suspect in a cargo van led Durham police on a high-speed chase down Highway 401 against opposing traffic.
A 38-year-old male passenger in the cargo van was taken as well to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
