PTC Web Desk: Bangladesh's interim government on Monday confirmed it had sent a formal diplomatic request to India, urging the return of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Dhaka. Hasina (77) has been in exile in India since August 5, fleeing the country during widespread student-led protests that resulted in the downfall of her 16-year rule.

The Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina and several former government officials, including Cabinet ministers and military personnel, for alleged "crimes against humanity and genocide."

Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain stated that Bangladesh had sent a note verbale to the Indian government, requesting Hasina's return for legal proceedings.

Earlier in the day, Home Advisor Jahangir Alam revealed that his office had forwarded a letter to the foreign ministry to facilitate the extradition process for the former prime minister.

Alam confirmed that an existing extradition agreement between Bangladesh and India could be used to bring Hasina back to Bangladesh for trial.
