Bangladesh general elections likely to be held in 2025, hints interim government

PTC News Desk: Bangladesh's next general election are likely to take place in 2025. Interim government's law advisor Asif Nazrul noted that parliamentary elections could be possible only by next year after all poll related preparations are completed. "There are many factors. This is a preliminary assumption to me. The interim government now wants to proceed with forming a new election commission through a search committee," he said.


"The new election commission, once stablished will prepare an updated voter's list. However there is no indication yet whether the biggest political party, Bangladesh Awami League, will be allowed to participate as cases against its top members are piling up," he further added.

Currently Bangladesh is facing volatile political situation with slew of cases registered against Sheikh Hasina following her resignation in the wake of mounting protests. The protests, led majorly by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs, took the shape of anti-government protests.

Notably, Bangladesh witnessed Sheikh Hasina's ouster amid students' protests turned into a massive anti-government movement, followed by the establishment of an interim government.

On August 8, Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh's interim government. The interim government expanded the powers of military to ensure the internal security of the country.
