American mountaineer found mummified in Peru 22 years after disappearance

PTC News Desk: According to authorities on Monday, the preserved body of an American mountaineer who vanished 22-years-ago while climbing a snow-covered peak in Peru has been discovered as a result of ice melt brought on by climate change.

At the age of fifty-nine, William Stampfl went missing in June 2002 after an avalanche buried his climbing team atop the more than 6,700-meter (22,000-foot) Huascaran mountain. The search and rescue mission was unsuccessful. According to Peruvian police, ice thaw on the Andean Cordillera Blanca range ultimately revealed his remains.

Images released by police showed that Stampfl's body, together with his clothes, harness, and boots, had been kept effectively by the cold. Among his belongings was his passport, which helped the authorities identify the body.
