'Will not allow centralisation of Panjab University': State Education Minister Hayer
Chandigarh, June 12: Punjab Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Sunday made a big statement against the centralisation of Panjab University, Chandigarh. Taking to Twitter, the state education minister wrote that Panjab University, Chandigarh is "our prestigious institution" and we will not allow its centralisation under any circumstances. It has historical and academic significance as well as is a heritage of our state, Hon'ble Chief Minister BhagwantMann and the Punjab Government are addressing the matter seriously. We will not allow its centralisation under any circumstances," a roughly translated tweet by Hayer read.
Meanwhile, thousands of students from several state universities marched on the streets of Chandigarh to protest the prospects of the centralisation of Panjab University. The issue arose after the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the Central Government to look into the possibility of turning Panjab University into a central university and file an affidavit by August 30.
