Beautiful, Rare Celestial Lights Seen In Ladakh
In a rare and unexpected display, auroras lit up the night sky in Leh, Ladakh.

The beautiful celestial lights were seen after a severe geomagnetic storm hit earth on Thursday.

The auroras were seen at India’s highest observatory in Hanle.

The auroras are typically witnessed farther up in higher latitudes. However, the intensity and frequency of solar storms this year have allowed the lights to capture the night sky much farther down in lower latitudes.

Sightings of the aurora were also reported in New Mexico and Alabama in the southern parts of the United States.

In Leh, red auroral transmissions were captured on telescopes used by the Indian department of science and technology.

In a statement issued by the Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), it said

"For an extraordinary fourth time during the current solar cycle, intense red-coloured Auroral activity was seen from Ladakh, India," posted Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA).

"The aurora was captured by the all-sky cameras at Hanle and Merak throughout the night," it added.

"The bright red emission in the northern sky was seen easily with the unaided eye and the Observatory staff photographed it with their cameras as well."
