Know all about historic 'Sengol' to be placed near Speaker's seat
What is Sengol and what does it signify? On August 14, 1947 at 10.45 pm, the late Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had received 'Sengol' from Tamil Nadu.

Historical importance: The historical importance of Sengol dates back to the Chola dynasty. The Sengol held immense significance in the coronation ceremonies of kings.

Meaning of Sengol: The word Sengol is derived from the Tamil word “Semmai” which means “Righteousness”. The Sengol is a sacred symbol of just and fair rule.

Sengol Event: Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, asked Pt Jawaharlal Nehru if there was a particular event to be followed to signify transfer of power, as per Indic civilizational norms.

Preparation of Sengol: The 20th Guru Mahasannidanam of the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam Sri La Sri Ambalavana Desika Swami accepted Rajaji’s request to arrange for the making of the Sengol.

The work to craft Sengol was given to renowned jewellers Vummidi Bangaru Chetty in Chennai, who are part of the Vummidi family and were involved in the making of Sengol and are still alive today.
