Uttarkashi avalanche: 26 bodies of climbers recovered so far
Uttarkashi, October 10: With the recovery of the bodies of five more avalanche victims, the number of bodies brought down from the summit camp so far has reached 26, Uttarkashi District Magistrate Abhishek Ruhela has said. The bodies of the avalanche victims were brought to the ITBP camp in Matli on Monday. However, at the same time, snow continues to hamper the efforts of the rescue teams to locate the two mountaineers who are still reported missing. As many as 29 climbers, comprising 27 trainees and two instructors, were part of an advanced mountaineering course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. However, all of them went missing after they were struck by a massive avalanche at an altitude of 17,000 feet on their way back from Draupadi ka Danda-II peak on October 4. A search operation by the SDRF, ITBP, Army and IAF continues. Deep Thakur, a trainee from Gujarat, who survived the accident while undergoing treatment at the district hospital, said the avalanche came all of a sudden while he was climbing to Draupadi's Danda Peak for a summit, due to which he along with his companions fell into the crevasses about 60 feet deep, where he struggled between death and life for about 3 hours.
