UP Elections 2022: SP releases list of 159 candidates, Akhilesh Yadav to contest from Karhal
Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav will contest the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections from the Karhal constituency, announced the party on Monday. SP also released a list of 159 candidates for upcoming state elections that are scheduled to take place in seven phases beginning February 10. Karhal, which is part of Mulayam Singh Yadav's Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency, has been won by the SP since 1993, except in 2002, when the BJP's Sobaran Singh Yadav won. Earlier, SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav had said he will contest the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections after taking permission from Azamgarh residents. Yadav is the Lok Sabha MP from Azamgarh. Nahid Hasan from Kairana, Yashpal Yadav from Babina, and Sitaram Kushwaha from Jhansi have also been handed tickets by the party. Meanwhile, former Uttar Pradesh Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav will contest from Jaswantnagar. Shivpal Yadav's Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party is part of the alliance led by SP's Akhilesh Yadav. Uttar Pradesh will hold elections for its 403-member assembly in seven phases. The voting will take place on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27 and March 3 and 7, with the counting of votes on March 10.
