NIA registers case in Udaipur beheading incident; accused had links with Pakistani extremist group

New Delhi, June 29: In the latest development in the Udaipur beheading incident, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered a case.

According to the registration of the case, probe teams have already reached Udaipur and requisite action for expeditious investigation of the case has already been initiated, the agency said on Wednesday.

Earlier, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the investigation of the gruesome murder of a man in Rajasthan's Udaipur who was allegedly beheaded by two men in broad daylight in the region.

"MHA has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the investigation of the brutal murder of Shri Kanhaiya Lal Teli committed at Udaipur, Rajasthan yesterday," HMO tweeted a day after the incident. The HMO further mentioned that "the involvement of any organisation and international links will be thoroughly investigated".

According to official sources, the NIA team will file a case under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Meanwhile, the police have claimed that the arrested accused had links with a Pakistani extremist group named Dawat-e-Islami. After the gruesome murder of a tailor in Udaipur sparked anger across the entire state, the Rajasthan government on Tuesday announced the imposition of section 144 of CrPC in all the districts for the next one month.

The state government had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. The team included the Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Special Operation Group Ashok Kumar Rathore, Inspector General of Police (IG), Anti Terror Squad (ATS), Prafulla Kumar and a Superintendant of Police (SP) rank officer and an Additional SP rank officer. Meanwhile, Internet services have been suspended in the entire state on Tuesday. Rajendra Bhatt, Divisional Commissioner of Udaipur, appealed to the people to keep the peace. "We appeal to the people of Udaipur to maintain peace. The (victim Kanhaiya Lal's) dependents have been assured of recruitment through placement service in UIT, and the family will be given compensation of Rs 5 lakhs," the Divisional Commissioner said. Police are on high alert.

"In view of the prevailing situation, Section 144 has been imposed in the entire district as well as the state. Shanti March has been cancelled by the organizers. We appeal to the people to maintain peace. Leaves of police personnel have been cancelled and they have been asked to report back. They are being deployed on law and order duty. We will ensure peace is maintained and take strict action against those attempting to disrupt it," Ajmer SP Vikas Sharma added. The incident occurred in Udaipur's Maldas area. Police stated that shortly after committing the murder, the two suspects posted a video on social media gloating about the beheading and threatening Prime Minister Narendra Modi's life. Within hours following the incident, the two accused were arrested.

According to authorities, one of the assailants, Riyaz Akhtar, attacked Kanhaiya Lal with a sharp-edged weapon, while the other, Ghos Mohammad, recorded the incident on his mobile phone. The victim, a tailor, allegedly shared a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokesman who made inflammatory statements against Prophet Mohammad. Local markets in the region were closed following the murder as shopkeepers sought justice for the victim.
