Chandigarh, September 2: The most-hyped micro-blogging site Twitter is in a legal battle with Indian government and banned 45,191 accounts of the Indian users in the month of July over content violation of its guidelines. In a meantime, Twitter suspended 42, 825 accounts for promoting child sexual exploitation, non-consensual nudity, and similar content in India, while blocking another 2,366 accounts for promoting terrorism. Also Read: Germany's Lufthansa airlines to cancel 800 flights due to pilot union strike Between June 26 and July 25, the micro blogging platform's local grievance mechanism in the nation received 874 complaints, of which 70 were addressed. More than 43,140 Indian user accounts got their accounts deactivated by Twitter in June. Twitter testing 2,500 character limit for a post Twitter also said in a report, "While we welcome everyone to express themselves on our platform, we do not tolerate behaviour that harasses, threatens, dehumanises, or uses fear to silence the voices of others." As per the new IT Rules 2021, all recognised social media platforms which have around 5 million users, have to publish monthly compliance reports. Meanwhile, Twitter receives all the complaints in Grievance Officer-India channel on all the issues related to account verification, seeking assistance or regarding any account. "These were all resolved and the appropriate responses were sent. We overturned none of these account suspensions after reviewing the specifics of the situation," said the company. The compliance report came as whistleblower Peiter Zatko, former head of security at Twitter, alleged that the Indian government forced the platform to "hire a government agent on its payroll" and "grant access to sensitive user data", a claim which has been dismissed by Twitter.
