Saudi Arabia's tower threatens Burj Khalifa's tallest building status
Jeddah Tower to be tallest? Fourteen years ago, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, soaring to a height of 828 metre, claimed the title of the world's tallest building. Its construction commenced in 2004, concluding with an official opening in 2010. Positioned as the focal point in a diverse Dubai development, it aimed to pivot the city's reliance from oil towards a business, tourism, and luxury-oriented economy. However, discussions about an upcoming structure potentially surpassing it have sparked debate on whether the Burj Khalifa's reign as the tallest will end.

As per Guinness World Records, a currently under-construction building in Saudi Arabia, known as Jeddah Tower or Kingdom Tower, is anticipated to exceed the height of the Burj Khalifa upon completion, towering over 1,000 metre (1 km; 3,281 ft). This architectural endeavor by the Jeddah Economic Company will encompass luxury residences, office spaces, serviced apartments, and upscale condominiums. Reports suggest it will also house the "world's highest observatory," though the current record holder we monitor is the University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory, situated at an altitude of 5,640 meters (18,503 ft), as stated by GWR.
According to GWR, Jeddah Tower, projected to cost $1.23 billion, poses a potential threat to Burj Khalifa's supremacy. This monumental project, a centerpiece in north Jeddah and part of a $20 billion mega-development, resumed construction in 2023 following a five-year hiatus. While uncertainties loom over its completion date, the proposed scale and amenities of Jeddah Tower stand as formidable contenders to the Burj Khalifa's record-breaking legacy.
