Ghibli-style AI art goes viral, but sparks debate over artistic integrity, ethics
PTC Web Desk: In recent days, social media has been flooded with AI-generated portraits mimicking the iconic Studio Ghibli animation style. While users are captivated by the visually stunning results, a debate over artistic integrity and ethics has emerged.
Critics argue that using artificial intelligence to replicate Hayao Miyazaki’s legendary art style undermines decades of hand-drawn craftsmanship. A Forbes journalist has called the trend “creatively and morally horrifying,” pointing out that Miyazaki, who has openly criticised AI-generated animation, never consented to such use of his work.
Supporters of the trend claim it is a form of admiration for Studio Ghibli’s aesthetic, allowing more people to experience its charm. However, opponents stress that AI-generated art often disregards the labour, passion, and originality behind traditional animation. They warn that such trends could set a dangerous precedent, reducing art to easily replicable algorithms rather than respecting its human creators.
As AI technology advances, the conversation about originality, artistic rights, and ethical AI use continues. While AI-generated Ghibli-style images may be visually appealing, the question remains—should they be celebrated or condemned for erasing the essence of handcrafted animation?
