Deepika Padukone slams L&T chairman's remarks on 90-hour workweek, calls defence statement 'worse'
PTC Web Desk: Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has criticised Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and its chairman, SN Subrahmanyan, over his comments advocating a 90-hour workweek and working on Sundays. Deepika, a vocal supporter of mental health awareness, labelled his remarks as "shocking" and expressed her disapproval on social media.
SN Subrahmanyan, during a recent interaction with employees, stated, "I regret I can’t make you work on Sundays. If I could, I would be happier because I work on Sundays." He added a controversial comment, saying, "What do you do sitting at home? How long can you look at your wife? Come on, get to the office and start working."
Amid the backlash, L&T released a statement defending its chairman, emphasising the company's dedication to nation-building. The statement read, "For over eight decades, we have been shaping India’s infrastructure and technological capabilities. The chairman’s remarks reflect the collective effort required to achieve the vision of becoming a developed nation."
Deepika shared the statement on her social media, commenting, "And they just made it worse..." Her reaction sparked widespread discussion, with many supporting her stance on work-life balance and mental health.
The debate around corporate India's demanding work culture gained momentum recently after Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy faced criticism for suggesting a 70-hour workweek. Subrahmanyan's remarks have further intensified the conversation about maintaining a healthy balance between professional and personal life.
