December 26 marks spectacular Cold Moon; the last full moon of 2023

PTC Web Desk: The final full moon of 2023, known as the Cold Moon, will reach its peak on December 26, a day after Christmas. This celestial event won't be limited to a single night; instead, it will span at least three nights, continuing to shine brightly until December 27. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the moon will achieve its maximum fullness at 7:33 pm on Tuesday (around 6 am IST on Wednesday).

Native Americans coined the term Cold Moon, referencing the typically cooler temperatures associated with December in the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally known as the Snow Moon, Winter Maker Moon, and the Moon When the Deer Shed Their Antlers, the latter term highlights the time when antlers of various deer species start to fall off. With the Cold Moon lasting for an extended period, it provides prolonged viewing opportunities during winter's long nights.

The Old Farmer's Almanac notes that the winter solstice Moon takes the highest path across the sky and remains above the horizon longer than any other Moon, hence coinciding with the longest night.

To observe the Cold Moon, finding a location with a clear view during the night will offer ample opportunities. Live Science suggests looking towards the east, where the Moon will shine between two bright stars: Capella in the constellation Auriga and Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion.

Following this event, the next full moon is scheduled for January 25, known as the Wolf Moon, named after howling wolves. It will mark the first of the 12 full moons in 2024.
