SGPC to elect President, office bearers today; check live updates
PTC News Desk: Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee will elect the president, office bearers and 11 members of executive committee at general house meeting. Stakes are high for both Shiromani Akali Dal and its rebel faction's candidate and three-time former SGPC president Jagir Kaur will be competing against sitting president and SAD nominee Harjinder Singh Dhami in gurdwara body poll.
The general house session will start at 12 pm at Teja Singh Samundri Hall. The office bearers and other executive members will be elected unanimously, however the president will be through secret ballot paper. Currently, a total of 148 members are eligible to vote.
Out of the 191 members in the general house, 170 are elected by Sikh voters during general elections, 15 are appointed through co-option, five are the current heads of Sikh temporal seats (jathedars), and one is the head granthi of the Golden Temple. It's important to note that jathedars and head granthis do not have voting rights.
