Sharad Purnima 2024: Kheer offerings on the auspicious full moon night: Know the date, time, and ritual significance
Sharad Purnima 2024: Sharad Purnima, also known as Kojagiri Purnima, Ashwin Purnima, or Raas Purnima, is a revered Hindu festival celebrated on the full-moon night of the month of Ashvin. This auspicious day is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, as well as honoring the Moon, or Chandra.
Observers of Sharad Purnima believe that the festival is imbued with positive energy and auspiciousness, making it a significant day for devotion and fasting.
In 2024, Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on October 16. According to the Drik Panchang, the Purnima Tithi begins at 8:40 pm on October 16 and concludes at 4:55 pm on October 17. The moon is expected to rise at 5:05 pm on the day of the festival.
Sharad Purnima holds great significance in Vedic astrology and Hinduism. It is a unique day when the moon rises and shines with all sixteen Kala(s), each representing a distinct human quality. The combination of these Kalas is believed to create an ideal human personality. Notably, Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, is said to have been born with all sixteen Kalas, while Lord Ram possessed twelve.
The radiance of the moon on this day is equated to amrit, or holy nectar, making it a moment of spiritual importance. Devotees believe that during Sharad Purnima, Goddess Lakshmi visits Earth, granting blessings of prosperity and well-being to those who honor her.
In addition to its philosophical significance, the moon is also thought to have healing properties on this night. This belief has given rise to the tradition of preparing Kheer, a sweet rice pudding. It is customary to leave the Kheer under the moonlight, allowing it to absorb the moon's healing energies. This practice is believed to enhance the dish's auspicious qualities for both body and soul.
On Sharad Purnima, devotees fast throughout the day, refraining from food until the evening. Once the moon rises, they offer prayers and present the Kheer to the Moon God. The following morning, the Kheer is distributed as prasad, a sacred offering to share the blessings received during the festival.
Sharad Purnima is not only a time for spiritual reflection and devotion but also an opportunity to celebrate the bounties of life, family, and community through the cherished ritual of sharing Kheer.
