Sharad Purnima 2023: Know the date, muhurat, history, and significance

Sharad Purnima 2023: Sharad Purnima, a significant festival in the Hindu lunar calendar, marks the transition from the monsoon season (Varsha Ritu) to autumn (Sharad Ritu). It is a harvest festival celebrated during the full moon in the month of Ashwin.

This festival is associated with Lord Krishna and Goddess Lakshmi, and it is observed with great enthusiasm in several Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh.

Date:

This year, Sharad Purnima will be observed on October 9. The auspicious timings for the full moon begin at 3:41 am on October 9 and extend until 2:25 am on October 10. The moon will rise at 5:58 pm on October 9.

Significance:

Sharad Purnima is considered the most important full moon night in Hindu beliefs. It is believed that during Sharad Purnima, all 16 Kalas (aspects) of the moon are revealed, endowing the moon's rays with healing properties.

The festival goes by various names such as Kumara Purnima, Kojagiri Purnima, Navanna Purnima, or Kaumudi Purnima. It is a tradition for many people to prepare a sweet dish called "kheer" and place it under the moonlight during Sharad Purnima. This kheer is consumed the following day, believed to possess special blessings.

In addition to moon worship, Lord Krishna and Goddess Lakshmi are also venerated during the festival. Devotees offer kheer and flowers as a mark of their devotion.

While different regions have their unique customs to celebrate Sharad Purnima, the worship of Goddess Lakshmi remains an integral part of the festivities.
