Punjab health professionals suspend OPD services in protest of Kolkata doctor’s murder
PTC News Desk: The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) has announced a suspension of outpatient department (OPD) services at public healthcare centers, including Aam Aadmi Clinics, throughout Punjab.
This action is a show of solidarity with the ongoing nationwide protests calling for justice following the brutal rape and murder of a resident doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
In response to the tragic incident, medical professionals at Chandigarh PGIMER have maintained their protest, demanding justice for the victim. The protest, which has been ongoing for five days, has caused significant disruption for patients at the PGIMER, who are calling on the government to address the doctors' demands promptly.
Medical professionals across Punjab have organised sit-ins at various health centers, pressing for immediate and effective action against those responsible for the crime. The PCMSA has called on the government to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable and to establish a central protection Act to safeguard healthcare workers. They are also advocating for improved security measures at public healthcare facilities throughout the state.
The strike has significantly impacted healthcare services, with medical staff united in their call for a safer working environment. The PCMSA has stated that the protest will persist until their demands are met.
The Resident Doctors Association of Government Medical College in Amritsar has declared a suspension of all non-essential and elective hospital services, including OPDs, operating theatres, and wards, starting from Friday. Doctors are also staging protests outside Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar as part of the broader movement for justice.
