Intermittent fasting: New study reveals improved mood, energy and appetite through 10-hour eating window
Intermittent fasting benefits: A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at King's College London has uncovered compelling evidence supporting the benefits of a 10-hour eating window on overall well-being. Presented at the European Nutrition Conference, this research challenges conventional dietary norms by showcasing how limiting eating to a specific time frame significantly enhances mood, boosts energy levels, and curbs hunger.
Intermittent fasting, a widely popular method for weight management, involves restricting food intake to a 10-hour window while fasting for the remaining 14 hours. Contrary to stricter fasting patterns, this study highlights the remarkable health advantages of a more flexible and manageable eating schedule.
Dr Sarah Berry, chief scientist at ZOE and King's College London, expressed enthusiasm about the study's outcomes, emphasising that adopting a 10-hour eating window proved beneficial for most individuals. Notably, consistent adherence to this eating pattern yielded notable improvements in mood, energy, and appetite, unlike those who followed it inconsistently.
An extensive sample of 37,545 individuals using the ZOE Health app participated in the research, with a significant proportion opting to extend their involvement. Among the highly engaged participants, predominantly female and averaging 60 years of age, a positive correlation was observed between longer pre-intervention eating windows and enhanced health benefits during the trial period.
Kate Bermingham PhD, also from King's College London and ZOE, highlighted the significance of meal timing, affirming that the health impact of food extends beyond what is consumed to when it is consumed. This study underscores that a strategic 10-hour eating window not only satisfies hunger but can also contribute to weight loss, challenging the notion that continuous eating is necessary for satiety.
The study's findings suggest that this unconventional yet manageable approach to eating could revolutionise dietary habits, offering promising insights into optimizing health through a tailored eating schedule.
