IIT Bombay breaks barriers, enters top 150 global university rankings for the first time
New Delhi, June 28: In a remarkable achievement, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has secured a position among the top 150 universities worldwide, as revealed by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2023 released on Tuesday.
IIT Bombay secured the 149th rank among the world's leading universities, marking its highest position in global rankings to date. Last year, it held the 172nd position.
The top three positions globally were secured by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, and University of Oxford.
The 20th edition of the QS World University Rankings evaluated 1,500 institutions across 104 locations and distinguished itself as the only ranking to emphasise employability and sustainability.

"This year, we've implemented our largest-ever methodological enhancement, introducing three new metrics: Sustainability, Employment Outcomes, and International Research Network. The results draw on the analysis of 17.5 million academic papers and the expert opinions of over 240,000 academic faculty and employers," stated the UK-based ranking agency Quacquarelli Symonds.

While Massachusetts Institute of Technology continued its 12-year reign at the top, University of Cambridge retained the second position, and University of Oxford climbed one spot to secure the third position.
In the 20th edition of the rankings, IIT Delhi secured the 197th position, a drop from 174 last year, whereas IISC Bangalore, the previous leader in the country, slipped to 225th place.
India witnessed a reduction of one university in the top 200 rankings compared to the previous edition. However, this year, two more Indian universities made their debut in the world's top 500 universities, with the University of Delhi (407) and Anna University (427) securing positions in the QS Rankings.
