Heroic rescue on Atal Setu Bridge: Cab driver and police save woman from plunge

PTC Web Desk: A dramatic rescue was witnessed on the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Trans Harbour Link bridge (also known as Atal Setu) in Nhava Sheva on Friday evening when a 57-year-old woman, on the brink of falling into the sea, was heroically saved by a cab driver and the local police. The incident, captured in viral CCTV footage, shows the cab driver, Sanjay Yadav, grabbing the woman just as she attempted to jump from the bridge.

The incident was reported around 7 pm when the woman, from Mulund, asked Sanjay Yadav to stop the cab on the bridge under the pretense of immersing religious photos into the sea. According to The Times of India report, a call was made to the police about the stopped vehicle and the woman crossing the bridge's railings.

A police officer from the Nhava Sheva Traffic Branch Patrolling Unit said: “We received a call about a vehicle stopped on the Atal Setu bridge with a woman crossing the railing. Upon arrival, the woman tried to jump into the sea, but was prevented from doing so.”

In a swift move, Yadav managed to hold onto the woman by her hair as she attempted to leap off the bridge. Simultaneously, four police constables quickly intervened, jumping the railing to pull her to safety. The woman was then taken to the Navi Mumbai police station, where her family was contacted. Senior Inspector Anjum Bagwan of the Nhava Sheva police station said the woman's family blamed it to her mental health issues. The woman reportedly told police that she lost her balance in panic upon seeing them approach.

This incident is not isolated; in July, a 38-year-old engineer, overwhelmed by financial stress, jumped off the Atal Setu bridge. Earlier in March, a 43-year-old woman also jumped from the bridge.
