Guru Nanak Jayanti 2023: Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Gurpurab 2023, signifies the revered birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru. Celebrated on Kartik Poornima in November, it holds immense spiritual importance for Sikhs. Guru Nanak Jayanti, falls on Monday, November 27.

Historical significance:

Guru Nanak Dev was born on April 15, 1469, at Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, near Lahore, now in Pakistan. The birthplace, Nankana Sahib in Punjab, hosts a Gurudwara dedicated to him. As the founder of Sikhism in the 15th century, he authored 974 hymns, contributing to the Guru Granth Sahib.

Teachings and values:

His teachings stressed the unity of the universe's creator, promoting selfless service, equality, and social justice. Guru Nanak Dev Ji's spiritual and social guidance is the cornerstone of Sikh philosophy.

Celebrations:

The celebrations at Gurudwaras commence two days before Guru Nanak Jayanti, initiating a continuous 48-hour recital of the Guru Granth Sahib called Akhand Path. A day before his birthday, the Nagarkirtan procession, led by Panj Pyare, carries the revered Guru Granth Sahib on a palanquin. It involves hymns, traditional music, martial arts displays, and parades through adorned streets.

Langar Tradition:

Reflecting Sikh values, Langar, a communal kitchen, serves anyone in need, transcending barriers of caste and creed. Guru Nanak's act of feeding hungry saints as a child inspired this tradition, symbolising unity and communal care.

Sikhism and social welfare:

Gurudwaras globally engage in humanitarian aid, offering food and shelter, embodying Sikhism's ethos of selfless service.

Holiday observance:

Guru Nanak Jayanti is a public holiday in multiple Indian states, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.
