EC declares 5 candidates ineligible from Punjab Vidhan Sabha 2022 elections, bars them from contesting
PTC News Desk: The Election Commission of India has disqualified five candidates from contesting future elections due to non-compliance with election expense regulations during the Punjab Vidhan Sabha 2022 elections. Punjab's Chief Election Officer, Sibin C, provided details, explaining that these candidates failed to submit their election expense reports within the designated time frame, as required under Section 78 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Consequently, they have been declared ineligible to contest elections for the next three years.
Among the disqualified candidates, three are from Sangrur district and one each from Mansa and Faridkot districts. The disqualification orders issued by the Election Commission include Shakti Kumar Gupta and Jaswinder Singh, both of whom contested from the Dhuri Vidhan Sabha seat in Sangrur, and Sanmukh Singh Mokha, who contested from the Sunam Vidhan Sabha seat.
Additionally, Gurcharan Singh Sangha, a candidate from the Faridkot Vidhan Sabha seat, has also been barred from contesting. The fifth candidate, Harbhagwan Sharma Bhikhi from Mansa district, who ran for the Sunam Vidhan Sabha seat, has been similarly declared ineligible for the next three years.
The decision underscores the Election Commission's commitment to enforcing compliance with election expense regulations, ensuring transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
