Amritpal Singh: A Radical Sikh leader with mass followers

Know all about Radical Sikh leader ‘Waris Punjab De’: 'Waris Punjab De' head Amritpal Singh and the Ajnala police reportedly reached a compromise after a clash at Ajnala on Thursday. This outfit was founded by late Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu. In an unfortunate incident Deep Sidhu was shot when he came into the limelight to support in the farmers’ agitation. 

On Thursday, tension gripped the border town in Amritsar when hundreds of supporters of the radical Sikh preacher laid siege to the Ajnala police station and clashed with cops seeking the release of Lovepreet Singh, alias Toofan, of Tibri village in Gurdaspur.

Today, the scenario went south, when the followers of Khalistan sympathizer wielded swords and guns in a clash with the cops outside Ajnala Police Station. There were hundreds of supports protesting against the arrest of Singh's close aide Lovepreet Toofan. 

There was heavy police force deployed all over the area. It seemed the protest site turned into a battlefield as agitators thronged the area with swords and guns and broke all police barricade outside Ajnala Police Station. The agitators clashed with the cops and there was huge traffic jam on the Amritsar-Delhi national highway.

Head of 'Waris Punjab De' Amritpal Singh, it is an outfit founded by late actor-activist Deep Sidhu, who died in a road accident in February last year. After the death of Deep Sidhu, Amritpal Singh was made the chief of the group. Late actor Deep Sidhu came into the spotlight last year when the farmers agitation was on the rise. He was arrested for violence during farmer protests on Republic Day. 

'Waris Punjab De' chief Amritpal Singh, is a self-styled preacher and claims to represent the Sikh community, was born in Jallupur Khera of Punjab. He recently got married UK-based NRI Kirandeep Kaur.

Amritpal Singh is a spiritual leader and is known for his oratory skills; he promised to make Punjab drug free and thus this won the hearts of the people of Punjab and he was able to make huge followers from Punjab and all over India. 

He always stayed in controversy and he also worked in Dubai for 10 years where he owned a family transport business. 

Last year in December, supporters of Amritpal Singh vandalised the Model Town Gurdwara in Jalandhar by burning chairs and sofas, saying that keeping them in gurudwaras was against the tenets of Sikhism. Another gurdwara at Biharipura village in Kapurthala district was also vandalised.

Why supporters of Amritpal Singh were protesting today?

The leader Amritpal Singh is involved in several cases leading from kidnapping and theft lodged against him. In a very recent case, where he was booked by Punjab Police for assaulting and abducting a Sikh leader. His aide has been arrested in the case.

The youth who was beaten up, Varinder Singh, is a resident of Ropar district of Punjab. There was a Facebook Live against Amritpal Singh and accused him of misleading Sikhs. Angered by this, Amritpal and his associates thrashed him. Following this, police registered an FIR on Varinder Singh's complaint.

He is already on the Centre's radar after the Home Ministry recently wrote to the Punjab government expressing concern over the alleged suspicious activities of Amritpal.

Singh had issued a threat recently to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying he would meet the same fate as that of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, according to report.
